ICT (Vocational) OCR Cambridge Technical Introductory Diploma at Mascalls Academy

Course description

Cambridge Technical in IT is a vocationally-related qualification that take an engaging, practical approach to learning with both examined and practical assessments. They are industry-relevant, and suit a broad range of learning styles and abilities. The course comprises of various ICT skills-based units which are assessed as coursework portfolios, as well as 2 mandatory examined units.

Course content

There are five units in the Introductory Diploma – two of which are compulsory examinations and three further units. Compulsory Examination Units are in ‘Fundamentals of IT’ and ‘Global Information’. There is then a choice of three optional units, which will be selected depending on the cohort. You will be encouraged to work as part of a team and also to develop independent learning skills. The course is tailored towards ICT skills which are used in industry and so the focus is on the practical application of ICT software skills and project management, working towards creating systems and solving problems by the use of computers. The examination units are completed in Year 12, and the remaining units at the end of year 12 and into Year 13. These optional units are assessed in school and then verified by an external visiting moderator.

Entry requirements

Applicants will be expected to achieve 5 A*-C at GCSE (including English Language and Maths) plus Grade C or above in GCSE ICT or equivalent

Future opportunities

The course is suitable for anyone who wishes to pursue further study or a career in which a broad range of advanced ICT skills would be useful. Although students wishing to pursue a career involving ICT should opt for the Applied A Level in ICT, this course would suit students for whom a Level 3 ICT qualification would be useful within a combination of other subjects. This course does carry UCAS points for those students who wish to go into Higher Education.
