Graphics A Level at Copleston High School

Course description

This course is suitable for those prepared to complete extensive, consistent coursework. It is a chance to extend your skills and to learn more about Graphic Design as a form of Art and as a commercial and academic discipline. This course
is ideal for anyone who wishes to progress to college/university and pursue a career in the creative industries.

Both AS and A2 are split into two projects. Unit 1&2 for AS, Unit 3&4 for A2; units 2&4 are externally set by AQA. Throughout the course you will be expected to keep a portfolio and work towards a theme. You will be involved in a variety of practical lessons which build on existing knowledge and also new methods of thinking, creating and producing finished work. The end result for each unit it determined by the student and the sketch book is required to ‘tell a story’ of how the product has been designed and created. You will investigate various print techniques, typography, methods of image making, digital imaging, 3-D installation graphics, graphic products and perhaps even animation.

Course content

Most sessions for AS and A2 are taught together allowing for creative thinking and the sharing of ideas. You will be expected to equip yourselves with sketch books throughout the course and have a selection of art equipment at home. You may find that you will need to buy books and pay for trips.

Entry requirements

4 AS levels – at least 5 grade Bs or equivalent in different GCSEs or other Level 2 courses. 3 AS levels – at least 5 grade Cs or equivalent in different GCSEs or other Level 2 courses. in addition, an ability to produce extensive coursework and work to tight deadlines. Plus a proven aptitude in Art and Design subjects. This is a locality course and cannot be taken with another locality subject.

Assessment

(AS level: Component 1 - coursework portfolio internally assessed - 60% of AS
AS level: Component 2 - Externally set assignment (10hrs supervised) - 40% of AS
A2 level: Component 1 - Personal investigation internally assessed - 60% of A2
A2 level: Component 1 - Externally set assignment (15hrs supervised) - 40% of A2

Future opportunities

Students go onto study a range of subjects at University including Marketing, Graphic design, Architecture and Art.
