Course description

Level 2 Technical Qualification
This course is ideal for motivated people wishing to pursue a career in hairdressing. It will give you a recognised professional qualification and develop both the practical skills and the knowledge you need to work as a junior stylist in the industry. As part of the course you will also have the opportunity to visit major exhibitions and shows featuring top stylists and leading manufacturers. If you have a keen interest in hairdressing this could be the course for you.

Course content

What you will study

The course will cover Hairdressing Services in theory and practice and will include:

• Health, Safety and Hygiene
• Advise and consult with clients
• Blow dry and style hair
• Colour and lighten hair
• Cut ladies hair
• Set and dress hair
• Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
• Style hair with electrical equipment

You will also be required to attend a work placement in a salon one day per week. The work placement team can help you with this.

The development of Maths and English are key elements of any full-time programme of study in College. You will need to attend sessions allocated on your timetable. These are varied and designed to cater for all ability levels. You will receive advice and guidance regarding the correct level for you.

Skills in Maths and English will support your full-time course, assisting you with assignment writing, research, job applications, presentations, managing your own finances and interpretation of data, to mention just a few. They will also help you in the future. Most employers are looking for ability in these areas and the majority of university courses require you to have Maths and English GCSEs at A*-C (or new grade 9-4). This is why the development of Maths and English is so important, whatever your field of study.


Your Course Structure

Classroom: 30%; Practical: 70%

How you will learn

Hairdressing skills will be demonstrated and practised in the College salons, where you will have the opportunity to bring in your own models or to work on paying clients. The knowledge required to gain certification will be gained in theory lessons and by independent study in the library.


One year, full-time.

Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs A*-D or 9-4
Level 1 Hairdressing, plus Level 1 Functional Skills in English and Maths.


Will need to produce a portfolio, and will have graded practical; assessments, external examinations and a graded synoptic assessment.

Financial information

Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18 years old. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, residentials etc which are payable by all students.
Any student entered/registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and then withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any resit examination will incur a cost.

Future opportunities

Further study

Students who successfully achieve the Level 2 Diploma can progress to our full-time VRQ Level 3 Diploma in Hairdressing Studies, or, subject to obtaining suitable employment in the industry.  You may also like to progress to Make-up Artistry or other qualifcations.

Career opportunities

You can work in a varies of setting e.g. hairdressing salon, cruise ship, health farm or moblie hairdressing.

      The Castleford Campus (previously known as the skillsXchange) houses the College’s provision in Construction, Motor Vehicle, Engineering, Hair and Beauty, IT and some Care and replaces the training which was previously offered at the College’s Whitwood Campus.

      Located at Junction 32 of the M62 between Castleford and Pontefract, the site is well known for Xscape, the indoor ski slope whose building houses a 14-screen cinema, bowling alley, climbing wall, sports facilities and restaurants. The Campus is situated directly next to the Asda in Glasshoughton.

      A learning resource centre, equipped with the very latest in technology, is a superb place for individual study, or to relax and use the internet. The Centre overlooks the large external courtyard, where students can mix, mingle and chill.

      In state-of-the-art hair and beauty salons, including a nail bar, we are training the next generation of hairdressers and beauticians. These professional salons offer live training environments to our students, with treatments for both men and women available at affordable prices. There are also industry standard facilities for the study of construction and engineering, motor vehicle and electrical courses.
