Course description

You will develop the ability to read, understand and respond in writing to a wide range of works.

Gain the skills necessary to become an independent, reflective and confident reader – in other words, you’ll feel confident to read all kinds of different literature for yourself.

Learn how to analyse and evaluate themes and ideas in literary works.

Be able to analyse the power and impact of language.

Better understand how Literature is influenced by social, historical and cultural factor.

Appreciate how different readers and critics interpret different literary works.


Entry requirements

 5 A*-C grades including a grade C in English



40% coursework (20% of A level grade) Two texts for study within dramatic genre of Tragedy.

60% exam assesses four texts: two novels (at least one post 1990) and two poetry texts 1800-1945.


Future opportunities

 An English Literature qualification is regarded extremely highly as an entrance qualification for a wide range of university courses. It is a creative and academic subject, so it also combines well with humanities subjects (e.g. History, Politics, Economics or Law) and Arts subjects, such as Theatre Studies, American Studies. 

You could take this course with other advanced level courses or equivalent to prepare for higher education in English studies or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to English Literature such as a Teacher, Journalist, Author or Poet. The course will also help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
