Wood - NVQ Level 2 Wood Occupations - Site or Bench at Calderdale College

Course description

This is a practical and theory based course which consists of the student/candidate working through a number of work related units following either a bench joinery or a site carpentry route.

Course content

These are achieved through assessment by observation, questioning, practical phase test and external examination. Work related units are:Mandatory Core Units (All Options)Unit no. VR01 - Conform to general workplace safety.Unit no. VR02 - Conform to efficient working practices.Unit no. VR03 - Move and handle resources.Bench Joinery Option (Any two of the following units)Unit no. VR13 - Set up and use circular saws.Unit no. VR14 - Produce setting out details for routine products.Unit no. VR15 - Mark out from setting out details for routine products.Unit no. VR16 - Manufacture routine products.Site Carpentry Option (Any three units from the following):Unit no. VR09 - Install first fixing components.Unit no. VR10 - Install second fixing components.Unit no. VR11 - Erect structural carcassing components.Unit no. VR12 - Maintain non-structural carpentry.Unit no. VR13 - Set up and use circular saws.Upon completion of each job knowledge pack the student has to undertake a unit end test.

Teaching is delivered through on site assessment in the workplace by a qualified assessor.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a Level 1 Diploma in Wood Occupations. Relevant industrial/commercial experience and be in suitable employment in the construction industry (site evidence). Successful outcome from assessment test and interview.

Assessment

Continuous assessment throughout the course based on:  Practical observation, Oral questioning, Portfolio evidence and Written assessment.

Financial information

In most cases students aged 18 and under who wish to enrol on a full time further education course will have their fees waived.  Students who are aged 19 and over and who wish to enrol on a full time course should contact our Student Services Team on 01422-399367 for more information.

Future opportunities

Progression from this course could be to gain an NVQ level 3 through work based evidence or on to a Level 3 Diploma.
