Further Mathematics A level **FEES PAYABLE** at Marlborough College

Course description

More students study Mathematics than any other subject in the Sixth Form at Marlborough. Pupils can choose a single A level in Maths or to combine it with A level Further Maths and beyond to A level Furthest Maths.

Mathematics is unique in having a second A level and more sitting above the standard one and this leads to the multitude of options available in the Edexcel Scheme. This offers 18 units in all and allows pupils who go beyond the standard A level often to build up highly individual unit profiles which may well go beyond the standard 6 or 12 units.

Course content

The study of mathematics at AS or A level trains the mind to look at any situation in a variety of ways. It promotes logical thought processes, extends the powers of reasoning and provides a real sense of achievement when a complex problem is finally solved. 

Students who opt for Further Mathematics will have to complete at least 6 additional units to the standard A level, two of which are Further Pure 1 and 2. 

The use of ICT is encouraged and pupils have access to an online mathematical teaching package which is used through the curriculum and can be used for revision purposes. The use of graphical calculators is encouraged in the sixth form and all students are instructed in their use. 


Each unit is examined by a paper lasting 1 hour and 30 minutes. There is no coursework component. 

Future opportunities

We prepare students to study mathematical subjects at the top universities, including Oxford and Cambridge. Oxbridge lessons start during the Lent Term of the Lower Sixth: initially, we tackle a broad base of interesting and challenging ideas but later focus more specifically on the Oxford entrance examinations and then the STEP examinations for Cambridge.

The subject provides an excellent foundation for further study and employment. It is an A level which complements many other A levels such as the Sciences, Computing, Geography, Psychology, Business Studies, History and other subjects. It is essential for a whole range of degree courses in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science and helpful for a whole variety of others. Students are advised to check the entry criteria for their proposed degree courses, especially to studying both Mathematics and Further Mathematics as a double A level.

At very competitive universities it is often expected that those applying for courses in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Economics, etc. will have taken the opportunity to study as much Mathematics as possible and failure to do so can result in rejection. 

Further information

Approximately a third of each year group will compete in the senior mathematical challenge each year. Several students each year qualify for the follow-on rounds and beyond.  We also enter a team in the National Senior Team Competition where we have reached the national final.

The maths library is an area where students can reference books specific to our subject and is also a place where they can go to work, students are also free to work in classrooms where there is often a member of the department on hand to help them.

There is also an area dedicated to maths books in the main school library. We are even lucky enough to have an original edition of Newton's Principia Mathematica in the rare books section of our library.
