Psychology AS/A Level at Ysgol Brynrefail
What will I learn?
Psychology is the study of the mind and behaviour.
In AS there is an Introduction to Psychology. Study areas such as how we deal with stress, personality development and the treatment of mental illness. Also we will study the important investigations in Psychology such as teaching language skills to apes, a study into what makes obedient individuals, a study into what keeps older people happy and a study into what someone is looking for when starting a relationship.
During the second year, the following topics are studied: Mental disorders (such as schizophrenia and depression), the significance of dreaming, hypnosis, and how the memory works.
How will I learn?
In a variety of ways within the constraints of 5 lessons a week. There is an emphasis on practical work, group work, and development of thinking skills occur. There is also regular homework to ensure the development of examination preparation and skills
Good GCSE results that show a wide understanding of many subjects. Science and language skills are very important.
Curiosity, a strong work ethic and a drive to succeed in a new and different subject.
2 AS examinations, one in January and one in the Summer. Then, the following year, 2 A2 examinations.
Can lead to courses in Psychology, Social Sciences, Law, Education and Medicine
- jobs within the public / health sectors (e.g. teaching, nursing, medicine, police and social work),
- market research
