Hairdressing Level 3 at Sir John Gleed School

Course description

This course is for students wanting to enhance their skills and gain a further qualification within the hairdressing industry. As part of a team you will be working in a purpose built studio, "Studio 16". For NVQ Level 3, nine units have to be achieved gaining 58 credits. The qualification you will be working towards is recognised throughout the industry, enabling you to develop further to become an assessor. There may be the opportunity to enhance your qualification with additional optional units. A placement day is required for those who are not working within a salon, as this enhances commercial development and inspiration of our fantastic industry. The course duration is one year.

Course content

Mandatory (core) units:

  • Health and Safety
  • Promote additional services and products to clients
  • Provide Hairdressing consultation services
  • Creatively cut hair using a combination of techniques

Optional units may include:

  • Colour Hair using a variety of techniques
  • Provide colour correction services
  • Creatively dress long hair
  • Develop and enhance your creative hairdressing skills

Level 3—4 GCSE A* - D including English, preferably Science and NVQ2 in Hairdressing

Progression routes:

To work

Successful students can look forward to gaining employment within the hairdressing industry. Level 3 students can gain employment at junior stylist/stylist level. Other opportunities may include company representatives and salon management positions.

To study

Students who complete Level 3 Hairdressing can progress to HNC Hairdressing to become trichologist, Cruise liner hair stylist, Work in television, Senior stylist/Manager, own a salon, Work in the fashion industry, Teach or assess, be a hair stylist in the film industry or work in a hotel.
