Geography A Level at University of Chester CE Academy

Course description

Geography is about our changing world. It allows you to see why and how it is changing through the study of a variety of topical themes and issues such as climate change, the increasing threat of natural hazards, globalisation, movements of people, the gap between rich and poor countries and to carry out geographical investigations into selected topics. You will practise and acquire a useful range of transferable skills including problem solving, communication, literacy, numeracy and ICT amongst many others.

Course content (including assessment)

AS Level – 2 units: • Unit 1: Global Challenges: Global hazards, climate change, future global challenges. Assessed in a 1 hour 30 minute examination worth 60% of the AS course. • Unit 2: Geographical Investigations: Fieldwork and research based investigations into Extreme Weather and Rebranding Places. Assessed in a 1 hour 15 minute examination, worth 40% of the AS course.

A2 Level – 2 units: • Unit 3: Contested Planet: Looks at six key global issues: Energy Security, Water Conflicts, Biodiversity Under Threat, Superpower Geographies, Bridging the Development Gap and the Technological Fix. Assessed by examination consisting of two resource based questions and one issues analysis question based on material released prior to the exam. • Unit 4: Geographical Research: Choose one topic from an interesting list to study in depth. Assessment is by report style essay where the focus of the report title is released prior to the examination.

Entry requirements

• An interest in the world around you.

• A willingness to ask questions and find out answers.

• The enthusiasm to carry out fieldwork and research.

• The ability to think independently and work as part of a team.

• It is not essential to have studied GCSE Geography.

• 5 A*-C at GCSE level
