Course description

Outline of AS Syllabus
Candidates are expected to study:
Pure Unit C1: Algebra, co-ordinate geometry, sequences, series, differentiation and
integration, proof.
Pure Unit C2: Algebra and functions, sequences, series, trigonometry, exponentials,
logarithms, differentiation, integration, co-ordinate geometry, numerical methods.
Candidates also study either Statistics 1 or Mechanics 1:
Statistics S1: Mathematical models in probability, representation and summary of data,
correlation, regression, discrete random variables discrete distributions and the normal
Mechanics M1: Mathematical models in mechanics, vectors, kinematics of a particle moving in
a straight line, dynamics of a particle, statics of a particle, moments.
Outline of A2 Syllabus
Candidates are expected to study:
Pure Unit C3: Algebra and functions, exponentials and logarithms, differentiation,
numerical methods.
Pure Unit C4: Algebra and functions, co-ordinate geometry, sequences and series,
differentiation, integration and vectors.
Candidates also study either Statistics 2 or Mechanics 2:
Statistics S2: The binomial and poisson distributions, continuous random variables, continuous
distributions, hypothesis tests.
Mechanics M2: Kinematics, centres of mass, work and energy, collisions, statics of rigid bodies.

Entry requirements

Essential Student Qualifications and Abilities
A good knowledge of algebra.
Desirable Student Qualifications and Abilities
• Grade A or B at higher level GCSE is preferable.
• The ability to solve problems, work independently and meet deadlines.
• Perseverance and a logical mind.
