Performing Arts BTEC Level 2 Diploma at Reading College

Course description

Reading College’s BTEC is unlike any other in the country. You will join Reading Studio of Dramatic Art, which is a partnership with Reading’s professional theatre company: Reading Rep. If you are looking to get into drama school, work as a theatre professional, or go to university to study in the arts, then this is the course for you. You won’t be learning in a classroom, you will be working as a professional company of artists and staging numerous productions open to the public. You will be taught by leading industry experts, as well as highly qualified academic staff, to ensure that you receive a fully rounded experience and are prepared for life in the industry. This is much more than a qualification, this is an opportunity to train with a professional theatre company.

Students studying on this exciting programme will gain access to exciting performing arts facilities, skilled and industry experienced teaching staff, excellent routes of progression within Reading College for further performing arts courses and a full Performing Arts BTEC Level 2 Diploma. In addition you will be working towards GCSE in English and maths.

Course content

You will learn what it takes to work in the theatre industry. You will be working with professionals and treated as professionals. There are many careers in the performing arts; not just onstage but back stage too. In the morning you will learn to develop your voice and speech, your body and movement, to enhance your creativity and succeed in any avenue you choose to pursue. In the afternoon you will train with the professional company on various productions and workshops throughout the year, not just using our industry-standard facilities, but in the community too. You will see, experience and shadow theatre professionals at work. You might even get the chance to work with Reading Rep.

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs grade D or above including English Language, or a BTEC Level 1 Diploma with a Merit profile and Functional Skills Level 2. All applicants will be interviewed and auditioned. A satisfactory reference is required.

Future opportunities

You could progress to the Performing Arts BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary/Extended Diplomas.

      Reading train station is a 20 minute walk from the College.

      Travelling from surrounding areas: there are direct lines from many local stations including: Didcot, Slough, Maidenhead, Wokingham, Basingstoke, Newbury, Pangbourne, Twyford and Earley.

      Travelling from London: there are regular trains from London Paddington to Reading taking 25-30 minutes.

      BY BUS

      There are regular bus services that stop along Kings Road:

      Reading Buses - routes 13, 14, 17
      Please Note: Reading buses require the exact fare.

      Arriva - routes 800, 850
      First Group - route 190
      Thames Travel - routes 126, 127

      In partnership with Reading Buses, students can get a weekly Travelcard at a reduced rate by showing the driver their student ID card.

      The Green Bus will be operating two new bus services from September 2014 for Reading College students.

       
      Service RC1 and RC2 will run once daily according to an agreed timetable on 175 days of each academic year connecting the college with Slough, Maidenhead and the areas in between.
