Music AS/A2 at Onslow St Audrey`s School
Unit 1: Performing (30%) involves a solo or ensemble performance
lasting five minutes, recorded and assessed by your teacher in the
spring and moderated by the board.
Unit 2: For Composition (30%) students select one of four briefs
which becomes the basis for a three-minute composition. Students
also produce a sleeve-note to accompany their composition. It is
completed under controlled conditions and externally assessed.
Unit 3: Developing musical understanding (40%) focuses on
listening to set works and understanding how they work.
Assessment is through a two hour examination externally marked.
Harmonic analysis and a simple harmony composition exercise
complete this unit.
Unit 4: Asks students to extend their performance skills and
produce a performance of 12-15 minutes in length. The music is
assessed by the centre and moderated by the board.
Unit 5: Offers students the choice of producing up to two more
compositions or completing two technical studies. These are
completed under controlled conditions.
Unit 6: Further musical understanding focuses on listening to set
works and unfamiliar music and understanding how they work.
Assessment is through a 2 hour examination where essay writing
skills are also assessed.
Studying music at advanced level prepares students for university
degree courses in music, performance courses at conservatoires or
provides an academic insight into a subject which offers enjoyment
to people throughout their lives.
Music A*-C at GCSE, theory of Grade 5 standard.*APS: 40 or above
