Mathematics at King Alfred's Academy
The course is modular with three units for AS Maths and three further units for A2 Maths. The six units will be made up of four Pure units and two Applied units. For the Applied Units you study Mechanics in Year 12 and then you will have the choice of Statistics or Mechanics 2 in Year 13.
The Pure Maths topics include further algebra, trigonometry, co-ordinate geometry and calculus. The statistics units include probability, correlation, probability distributions and the normal distribution. The Mechanics units include forces, motion in one and two dimensions, work, energy, power and momentum
Typically students need at the very least 5 or more GCSE’s at grade C or above to be successful on an Advanced Course. There are more than 30 subjects to choose from though some may require more than a C grade.
Students wishing to study this subject will need to achieve a minimum of 5 A* - B GCSE qualifications in subjects with a significant numeracy and scientific content (e.g. Maths, Statistics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Business). In addition they will require at least a C grade GCSE in English Language If you did not cover A/A* work you will need to learn about some topics from the Higher Tier before you start the course (guidance will be given by Maths teachers).
