Design Tech (Systems & Control) at Hagley Catholic High School
Systems and Control is an exciting contemporary technology course that prepares you for the modern world of engineering or industry. We use the latest components and programmable chips to design and manufacture imaginative and varied products. Taught by specialist teachers with cutting edge equipment and software, you will produce high quality products and a professional portfolio of work.
Awarding body: AQA, Specification: D&T Systems & Control 2556. 2 hour written exam Exam based on Materials & Components theory taught in the first year. AS unit 2 Y12 Controlled Assessment (Approximately 50 Hours) This is the design and make aspect of the course and is made up of an electronic design portfolio and a working electronic product.. 2 hour written exam Exam consists of extended written answers and a design question. A2 unit 4 Y13 Controlled Assessment (Approximately 60 Hours). This is another design and make exercise, similar to the AS task, but building on the skills and knowledge learned over the course.
A good qualification in a workshop based D&T subject (Electronics, Graphics or Product Design) as well as at least Double Science. .
The course is a combination of formal learning, hands-on design and manufacture, and industry visits. Students will need commitment, enthusiasm and a genuine curiosity about their environment.

The course also relies on an understanding of how different technologies and materials work in the real world and so visits to manufacturers, and other workplaces are an essential part of the learning process.
Design & Technology can lead to several degree courses, including:
Electrical, Electromechanical or Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, Architecture, Spatial or 3D Design, B(Ed) Technology, Mathematics, the Sciences, Automotive Design and Computer or Internet programming as well as giving you access to direct employment or the Forces.
The communication skills you develop during the course are also of value in many other areas.
This is an exciting new course which we are studying for the second year at Hagley. It builds on our great successes at GCSE level and prepares students for the developing technologies in the world around us; the specification allows for the inclusion of new technologies or solutions as they develop combines well with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Business Studies, Engineering.
