Information Technology BTEC Subsidiary/Diploma/Extended Diploma at Buxton & Leek College
This exciting course will provide students with specialist technical skills in IT Support, Networking, Web Design, Computer Games Development, Multimedia and Software Development. It is the most up-to-date and IT focused qualification available today.
The course has a very wide range of units to choose from depending on your career plans and interests. To achieve the full extended diploma you need to complete 180 credits (18 units).
However, the course is also available at • Subsidiary Diploma (60 credits) • Diploma (120 credits)
This means it can be combined with other courses such as A Levels if required. The full extended diploma involves two years full time study. A minimum of 15 hours of teaching time per week is usually delivered over three full days. Hours and times on other awards will vary.
You will need to have 4-5 GCSE passes at grade C or above including English Language and ideally Maths or a Level 2 IT qualification or related subject with a Merit.
Students without Maths GCSE are also considered but they must study for that qualification during the first year of the program.
The programme is assessed through a range of methods including written assignments, projects, presentations, practical sessions and role-plays. Two units contribute towards a project assignment which is a major part of the second year of study.
This nationally recognised qualification can be worth up to 360 UCAS points so many students move on to Higher Education studying degree programmes.
The course is also an excellent entry qualification for Apprenticeship schemes which can be combined with a HNC or Foundation Degree available here at Buxton & Leek College. Career progression for Computing and ICT can include: IT Technician, Computer Game Designer, Website Designer, Software Developer, IT Buyer, Systems Analyst, etc.
