Economics AS / A Level at Kesgrave High School

Course description

AS Economics introduces the concepts of microeconomics - through an understanding of markets and market failure – and macroeconomics – in terms of the national economy.

A2 Economics develops this by considering competition theory in a European and global context as well as analysing macroeconomics on a global scale.

The 4 units are:

1 – Markets and Market Failure

2 – The National Economy

3 – Business Economics and the Distribution of Income

4 – The National and International Economy

Course content

A range of methods are used including formal teaching, group and individual work. Case studies and investigations will be used to develop understanding of both macro and micro economics in the context of today’s world. You will also be encouraged to investigate the economy and have a working knowledge of the current developments in the world of economics.

Entry requirements

GCSE Grade C or relevant subject.


All units are examined;

Units 1 & 2 are examined in 1 hour 15 minutes each, through a combination of multiple choice and data response questions.

Units 3 & 4 are examined in 2 hours each using one data response question and one essay. All 4 units carry equal weighting across the qualification.
