Course description

BTEC level 3 in Applied Science involves studying four units, Unit 1: Principles and Applications of Science, Unit 2: Practical Scientific procedures and techniques . Unit 3: Science Investigation Skills and Unit 4: Astronomy and Space Flight. The course involves carrying out a large amount of practical work. This involves analysis of solutions using titrations, making up standard solutions, using microscopes to analyse different types of cells and visiting scientific industries.


There are a total of four units in the specification, Units 1 is an external exam , Units 2 and 4 are assignments that will be set and marked by your science teacher. Unit 3 is a science practical tasks that is set by the exam board.

All assignments are graded as a pass, merit, distinction or distinction *.

Future opportunities

BTEC level 3 science pupils to work in the scientific sector, fields of work include research and development and scientific analysis. This course could allow progression in almost every industry, from food and drink to pharmaceuticals and working as a science technician.
