Mathematics Standard Level *Fees payable* at Brentwood School

Course description

This course is intended for students of sound mathematical ability, usually having achieved at least an ‘A’ grade in the GCSE or equivalent. These are students who wish to support a scientific Higher Level subject or who wish to follow future studies in Science or Economics, for example, which require more advanced techniques than covered on the Maths Studies option.

The core topics studied are the same as for the Higher Level course, but are obviously not covered in the same depth. Many of these topics will be already familiar to students from previous studies and their existing knowledge of these will be developed to enable execution of more challenging and fascinating problems. For Mathematics Standard Level there are two terminal exam papers which together account for 80% of the overall assessment. Paper 1 is a 1 hour 30 minute non calculator paper, with half the marks given for short-response questions and the other half to extended response questions. A GDC is allowed in Paper 2 which is the same format as Paper 1. Portfolio work, which will be undertaken in the latter half of the Lower Sixth Year and in the first term of the Upper Sixth, makes up the remaining 20% of the assessment
