Bench Joinery (Level 3) Advanced Apprenticeship at Central College Nottingham

Course description

This course is for those employed in the Construction trade as a Bench Joiner. You will attend college one day a week to complete the underpinning knowledge and portfolio in order to compile the evidence you need for the Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Bench Joinery. You will also study Functional Skills in English and Maths as part of the course and be required to complete an Employment Rights and Responsibilities work booklet to be awarded the full Advanced Apprenticeship Framework Certificate.

Course content

The apprenticeship is made up of the following elements:

  • NVQ 3 in Bench Joinery
  • Level 3 Diploma in Bench Joinery
  • Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)
  • Functional Skills in English and Maths


English and Maths are an essential part of your studies and will help you succeed on your course. These subjects will help you develop confidence and are the key employability skills that all employers now look for when recruiting.

Entry requirements

You must have completed the Level 2 Apprenticeship in Bench Joinery. Applicants should have 5 GCSEs at grade C or above including maths and/or English or Functional Skills at Level 1 in Maths and English at the discretion of the College.


Each unit is continually assessed. You will present evidence of competence via practical assessments and the production of a personal portfolio.

Future opportunities

After gaining work experience in the chosen occupational area there are also opportunities for you to progress into occupational work supervision, management, Higher Education or technical support areas.

Further information

You must be employed as a Bench Joiner before enrolling. You will be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment at all times during your placement and at college when using any tools / machinery.
