Photography A Level at Beaminster School

Course description

Photographs now surround us, broadening our understanding of the world, showing us exotic far flung places on Earth and beyond, whilst at the same time ensuring we can be more connected to one another than ever before with the rise of Instagram, Flickr, Facebook and other forms of social media based on images.

Since the art form’s beginning in the late 18th century, photography has come to dominate the media.  In order to understand the world around us, it’s increasingly important to understand how To interpret and produce images.

OCR’s course is designed to create an interest in, enthusiasm for, and enjoyment of the art, craft and history of photograph as well as providing an experience of traditional darkroom and digital photographic techniques.

Using the darkroom, Apple Macs and studio facilities, you will learn through a mixture of group work, individual projects, lectures, video tutorials and literature research students on this highly practical and informative course.

Course content

Year 1 (AS and A Level)

This art and design course, specialising in photography and lens based media, has been totally updated.

The AS course is now entirely assessed through a single 5 hour exam.  Students make a choice from a selection of themes set by OCR and have up to 5 weeks to produce a body of work on that theme, displaying a range of skills.  At AS level the coursework component has now been removed.  In its place, an intensive course blending traditional darkroom and digital techniques provides students with an-depth understanding of both practical photographic techniques and theory.

 Year 2 (A Level)

Building on the skills and techniques acquired during the AS course, students undertake a large scale personal investigation into a photographic topic of their choice and produce an in depth, well researched essay of 2000-3000 words to accompany their investigation.

At the end of the A2 unit, students sit a 10 hour exam.  As with the AS exam, the exam will be on one topic, their choice from a selection of starting themes and ideas set by OCR.
