English Literature at Newmarket Academy

Course description

English literature is a respected and prestigious academic subject. It is a must do subject for students who enjoy reading novels, watching plays and analysing poetry. Literary texts speak to us about human nature and society, and it is our task to explore the ideas and arguements put forward by some of the greatest minds of the past and present. In doing this course you will develop powers of emotional sensitivity and self expression which will serve you well not only in future employment but also in your personal lives.

This subject looks impressive on any university application form. The fact that you are studying English literature A level will be seen as a sign of intellectual potential. Admissions tutors and future employers will recognise that you are likely to possess powers of understanding, analysis and evaluation which are invaluable skills both in higher education and employment.

Course content

Aspects of narrative (two novels and two selections of poetry)

Dramatic genres (two dramatic comedies, one of which must be by shakespeare)

Elements of the gothic

Further and independent reading (some student free choice is possible)
