Design and Technology AS/A-Level at Haydon School

Course description

The course is divided in to four Units. Students will complete Units 1 & 2 for AS Level and Units 3 & 4 for A2 Level.

Course content


UNIT 1 (60% Internally Assessed)

  • Portfolio of creative skills
  • In this unit students will develop a port-folio of skills and knowledge focusing on the following areas.
  • Product Investigation: Performance Analysis, Materials and Components, Manufacture and Quality
  • Product Design: Design and development and Communication
  • Product Manufacture: Production Planning, Making and Testing

UNIT 2 (40% Externally Assessed)

  • Design and Technology in Practice
  • In this unit you will develop your knowledge and understanding of Graphic products, their production methods, materials & components and systems.


UNIT 3 (20% Externally Assessed)

  • Designing for the Future
  • In this unit, students will develop their knowledge and understanding of a range of modern design and manufacturing practices and contemporary design issues.

UNIT 4 (40% Internally Assessed)

  • Commercial Design
  • In this unit, students are given the opportunity to apply the skills they have acquired and developed throughout this course of study, and to design and make a product of their choice that complies with the requirements of a graphics project.


  • 60% Coursework
  • 40% Examination
