English Literature AS/A Level at Ysgol Emrys Ap Iwan

Course description

The course involves the study of a wide range of literature texts ranging from Shakespeare, through to poetry and contemporary texts. It also includes creative writing which is done as a coursework element and is written in response to wide reading of prose texts.

Course content

AS Unit Titles
Unit 1: Poetry and Drama 1

Section A: Poetry post 1900
Section B: Drama post 1900

Unit 2: Prose Study and Creative Writing
Section A: Prose Study 1800-1945
Section B: Creative Writing: one extended creative writing piece in response to wider reading of prose [20 marks] and commentary [20 marks]

A2 Unit Titles
Unit 3: Period and Genre Study

Three texts: one piece of extended writing on texts from different periods and genres, including poetry and prose.

Unit 4: Poetry and Drama 2
Section A: Critical Reading of Poetry: one text pre 1800 poetry and unseen poetry: choice of one from five questions
Section B: Shakespeare and related Drama: two texts: choice of one from two questions

*A2 texts will be finalised by the English Faculty in the spring of 2013

Entry requirements

Preferably an A*/A/B GCSE Grade in English Literature.

Assessment

Unit 1 – Examination [LT1] : 30% : 2½ hours’ written paper [open text]
Unit 2 – Coursework [LT2] : 20%
Unit 3 – Coursework [LT3] : 20%
Unit 4 – Examination [LT4] : 30% : 2½ hours’ written paper [closed text]

Future opportunities

A Level Literature is a very highly regarded academic course and is seen as essential if students want to study English or Law at university. It is also important for careers such as teaching, journalism etc.
