Government and Politics at Bishop Justus Church of England School
Students will study two units at AS Level. Unit 1 looks at ‘People and Politics’ and gives students a real grounding into the nature of democracy, with its strengths and tensions, and the key policies and traditions of the major political parties. Unit 2, ‘Governing the UK’, looks more at the structure of our State: the powers of monarch and politicians and the rights of the people. At A2 we will examine politics in the USA, with its talk of primaries and conventions and constitutional rights. If you want to understand the principles and ideas, developed by some of the finest thinkers the world has ever seen, that still underpin our political systems and arguments, this is the course for you. If you have ever wondered how the UK or the USA actually get things done, you will learn it here. Each unit is assessed by an examination. Both AS units are worth 50% of AS marks. Unit 1 has a 1 hour 20 minute examination in which students have to answer two structured questions. Each question is broken down into 3 shorter ones. Unit 2 is also 1 hour 20 minutes long. Students have to answer one stimulus-based question, again broken into 3 parts, and an extended question. All questions are worth 40 marks each. The A2 units are both worth 50% of A2 marks and have the same examination structure: 3 short answer questions and one essay question.
