A Level Textiles at The Bishop of Winchester Academy

Course description

Textiles helps students take a broad view of Design and Technology. The course will help students  develop their capacity to design and make products and appreciate the complex relations between design, materials, manufacture and marketing. This course is ideal for students who enjoy designing and making and are considering a career in a creative industry.

Course content

Through a combination of research; product analysis; independent study; group work; designing and manufacturing. Students will have the opportunity to work in both two and three dimensional forms. They will develop designs from a variety of starting points and respond in an intuitive and systematic manner. Students will gain an understanding of industrial and commercial practices and market influences through offsite visits.

Entry requirements

Students should meet the standard 6th Form entry requirements and have achieved a minimum of a GCSE grade B or Merit at Level 2 BTEC in this or a related subject.   A keen interest in designing and making combined with enthusiasm and a willingness to work hard during lessons and in your own time are the most important requirements.


Assessment will be through a combination of coursework portfolio and written examinations. 

Future opportunities

Students who achieve a pass in Textileswould find it very easy to progress onto the higher Art Foundation courses at Art College, or directly onto degrees if the portfolio of work is strong enough.  Potential careers include Graphic Design, Fashion, Fashion Buyer, Textile Design,  Sales and Retail.
