Textiles A Level at Barton Peveril Sixth Form College

Course description

  • GCSEs to include at least a C in Art or Textiles Technology
  • You will be required to complete written work as part of the course so GCSE English Language is advantageous
  • You will need access to a good quality camera for visual recording and a sewing machine outside of College
  • Practical coursework forms 60% of the course. The exam unit (40%) is also practical. You will be required to complete written work as part of your first year coursework and a 3000 word coursework essay in the second year.

Course content

This course is based on textiles and fashion as an art form. You will need to be enthusiastic about drawing and design. Enthusiasm, creativity, originality and self-discipline are all important attributes. Commitment outside of lessons is crucial to success. You will be set regular homework which will take the form of practical work, research and written work on artists, designers and craftspeople. Every piece of work you produce contributes to your portfolio for assessment. You will learn practically through a series of hands-on workshops exploring both decorative and constructed processes. Techniques such as transfer printing, shibori, machine embroidery, silk paper making and weaving will be covered. There will be many ways in which you can develop personal and inventive ways of working, supported by presentations on artists, designers and craftspeople. You will also draw inspiration and understanding from historical costume and multicultural textiles. There will be at least one study visit to galleries during the autumn term to enrich and inspire you. You will benefit from a well-resourced and experienced department with teachers and technical staff who are also practitioners in the field of textile art.
