English GCSE at Grŵp Llandrillo Menai

Course description

This course prepares you for external assessment in the subject (WJEC).

The course involves English Language and Literature. You will study drama (a Shakespeare play), poetry and prose. The course involves learning and developing different writing techniques and writing for different audiences/purposes. Speaking and Listening is also part of the assessment.

This subject can be studied alone or alongside another programme of study. At some campuses, this course is only available as a resit, for those who wish to improve their grade.

Many universities and employers ask for English GCSE at Grade C or above. If you have not achieved this whilst at school, Grŵp Llandrillo Menai will provide opportunities for you to improve your grades, to enable you to progress onto the appropriate further or higher education programme. 

There is financial support available for travel and childcare for those who are eligible.

Course content

A combination of learning methods including discussion, debate, exercises, assignments, reading, comprehension and presentations. Homework is an integral part of this course.

Entry requirements

Mature students: no formal qualifications are required. 

For those aged 16-19 years:

  • a Grade D in GCSE English is required;
  • if you didn't achieve a Grade D in your GCSE and are studying a two year course at college, you will have the opportunity to follow a course to improve your skills in your first year. You may then be able to resit your GCSE in your second year. 

All places are subject to satisfactory interview.


The external assessment process covers both Controlled Assessments and examination.

  • AS and A Levels
  • Access to Higher Education
  • Vocational qualifications including Level 3 vocational qualifications
  • University level courses, depending on your other qualifications.

Depending on the campus, students may be able to access elements of the programme in both English and Welsh through some programme learning materials being made available bilingually. Details will be provided to you at interview.
