Design and Technology - Product Design: Textiles A Level *FEES PAYABLE* at Eastbourne College
The Textiles course has a strong practical element with a 50% of the examination being awarded for designing and making. People who enjoy this course often have an interest in fashion trends and styles and love to work with fabric. You will have increased opportunity to use new materials and techniques including laser cut fabrics, digital prints and specialist textiles software. You will be expected to be imaginative and to work independently, drawing on your personal interests - be it fashion, theatre or interior design. This course will allow you to create high quality textile products from your own original designs. You will also have opportunities to apply for the Crest gold award and to enter competitions; our students have regular success at the South of England Craftsmen of the Year Award.
There are four main study topics, two per year, each worth 25% of the A-level.
At AS you will study Unit 1, ‘Materials, Components and Application’ so that you will understand materials, production processes and the impact of cost and design. This is the academic part of the AS year. Unit 2 is titled ‘Learning through designing and making’ and is the practical coursework part of your AS.
At A2 Unit 3 is ‘designing and manufacture’ where you will develop your understanding of the relationship between design and technology, or form and function. It is the academic part of the A2. In Unit 4 you will complete your coursework and practical work. You will create a portfolio and product and record the processes you went through.
