Nail Technology Advanced Technical Diploma Level 3 at PETROC

Course description

If you are ready to learn the more sophisticated techniques and skills of the nail beauty business, this study programme will give you expertise in a wide range of both theoretical and practical aspects of nail services needed to succeed in the industry.

Course content

As you progress, you'll improve both your understanding of techniques and the skills they demand, including all aspects of nail extensions including liquid and powder acrylic, gel, fibreglass and coloured acrylics. You will also learn sculpting, nail art, including 3D embedding (into acrylic or gel), airbrushing and electric filing.

The skills training is supported by study of relevant anatomy, along with salon health and safety. There is a valuable commercial component to the programme too, so you can learn relevant skills required in the nail industry such as reception, client communication and the selling and promoting of services and products. Final assessments are based on your practical work and your portfolio.

Entry requirements

Four D's at GCSE to include English & Maths

To apply for this study programme you must have already completed a full Level 2 in Beauty Therapy or a recognised qualification in Manicure and Pedicure.


Throughout the qualification, a range of theory and practical assessments will support your learning and test your knowledge and skills development. You will be taught by industry professional staff within our brand new modern commercial salons.

On-going assessment is by multiple choice question tests that you complete online, as well as working on clients to gain competency and confidence within this speciality field.

Throughout the qualification we will also be working on the development of your Employability Skills as well as your Maths and English.

Future opportunities

Following successful completion of the course you will be invited to continue your studies with us. For a career within the industry you could also progress on to Level 3 in Beauty Therapy & Spa. However, should you wish to take an alternative route you can study further and specialise in Theatrical, Special Effects Hair and Media Make-up or Level 4 Diploma in Management Practice and Advanced Techniques. 

Alternatively, you can enter employment in the beauty/nail technician industry. Options could include beauty/ nail salons, cruise liners, media/ photographic work, and a mobile technician.

Q. Will I have to wear a uniform?
A. On your first day, you will come in your own clothes, you will then be expected to wear all black until your uniform arrives.
Once you have your uniform, you will be expected to wear this at all times except in GCSE or Functional Skills.
