Drama & Theatre Studies A-Level at Sir William Ramsay School

Course description

This course offers the opportunity for students to explore and research a variety of theatre genres, playwrights’ intentions and performance skills. It is a combination of both practical and theoretical study.

Students will develop their knowledge and understanding of the language of drama, as well as improve their directorial, critical and analytical skills. Students will also be given the opportunity to visit the theatre and see professional practitioners in action.

Year One: AS Level

Unit One: Exploration of Drama and Theatre

Unit Two: Theatre Text in Performance

Year Two: A2 Level

Unit Three: Exploration of Dramatic Performance

Unit Four: Theatre in Context

Entry requirements

This course is suitable for those students who have a passion for the subject, who are confiednt in performing and enjoy learning and researching different styles of theatre.

AS: students will complete written coursework, including a 3000 word essay. This coursework is a combination of independent study, and a reflection on workshop style lessons. Students must have achieved an A*-C grade in English.

A2: students keep production notes throughout their devising process. These notes, along with a detailed evaluation will be submitted as coursework. Students will also sit an exam based on a live production, research into theatre history, and a director’s interpretation of a play.

Future opportunities

Students successful on this course could progress to Higher National Diplomas or degrees in further or higher education. Other students may wish to seek employment in related Performing Arts careers.
