Sports Therapy, Health and Well-being (Therapy) at Derby College

Course description

The Sports Therapy, Health and Wellbeing study programme combines a technical level qualification - in the form of a sports massage diploma - with a Diploma in Sports Science and Advanced Research.

It is delivered over two years and aims to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills needed for a career as a sports massage therapist, either employed or self-employed. It also provides learners with  UCAS points to study at a higher level.

Year 1 is delivered at the Joseph Wright Centre, Year 2 is split between the Joseph Wright and Ilkeston campuses.

Course content

In Year 1 learners will complete a Subsidiary Diploma in Sports Science. This qualification covers anatomy, physiology, fitness testing, research methods, research project and fitness training and programming. You will also be working towards the Certificate in Health Champions qualification.

In Year 2 learners will complete their Diploma in Sports Science and Advanced Research and commence a Diploma in Sports Massage. The qualification comprises all the elements needed to work effectively and efficiently as a sports massage therapist. These include anatomy and physiology, professional practice, an understanding of the principles of health and fitness, and how to provide sports massage treatments.

Entry requirements

You need:

  • Five GCSEs at grades A*-C which must include both Maths and English
  • Good customer service and communication skills
  • Excellent personal hygiene, appearance and professional demeanour
  • A flexibility to work at events and external opportunities throughout the academic year.

Links with sports teams, clubs or fitness centres are desirable to ensure your work placements are set up immediately. Please enquire about the available UCAS points on this study programme if you wish to progress to higher education.


Learners will be assessed through a range of methods including:

  • presentations
  • reports
  • exams
  • practical assessment
  • discussion

Future opportunities

Learners who complete this qualification will be able to gain employment and obtain insurance to work as a sports massage therapist.

They can also consider progression to the:

  • Level 4 Certificate in Sports Massage Therapy
  • Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training (Gym-based Exercise)
  • Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching
