Art A Level at Sydenham School - Sydenham and Forest Hill Sixth Form

Course description

Our approach to this course is designed to give students the confidence, knowledge, and discipline to further their study of Art in higher education.

A Level Art is also the perfect complementary course for students who want a broad and balanced curriculum.

Course content

Year 12

This is a broad and flexible course that incorporates many ways of approaching art. Students study a range of artist’s work spanning many periods and cultures.

The first term of the course gives students the skills to work in many disciplines, including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, installation, photography, text, film and animation. Students are then required to create an artwork to be displayed at our annual exhibition in January.

In Year 12 students pick their own theme to develop through research and practising with materials. Both preparation work and the outcome are assessed.

Year 13

The A Level comprises of one coursework unit (60%) and one externally set exam unit (40%). The A level supports and challenges students to be more independent in preparation for further study.

Much of Year 13 is self-directed with the student choosing the focus of their practice, supported through tutorials and practical advice by the expert teachers in the Art Faculty. Students are expected to complete a creative written study to support their practical outcomes.

We organise day trips to London galleries and a compulsory residential trip in October to an activity centre in Cudham

Entry requirements

Minimum point score of 38 including Maths and English at grade 4 at GCSE.

This is equivalent to 4B and 4C grades overall at GCSE.

Art & Design (Art) Grade B in Art. Textiles or Graphics grade B considered + portfolio

Assessment

Reformed A levels are two year linear courses.

This means that the whole course is assessed at the end of Year 13.

AS qualifications are also available in the reformed subjects and the content of these may be co-teachable with the first year of the A Level course. AS examinations for these courses are Stand Alone qualifications and do not contribute to the final A level grade.

Students starting on a reformed/linear A level in September 2017 will be required to sit a formal exam at the end of Year 12, this may be the AS Stand Alone qualification. The formal exam at the end of Year 12 will give students an important indication of how their learning is progressing and will ensure that students are ready to progress into Year 13.

Students must achieve a D grade or better in all of their A Level courses in the Year 12 examinations to progress to Year 13.

Future opportunities

Previous students have gone onto foundation courses in art and design, degrees in Art, Art history, illustration, photography and fashion, both in the UK and abroad.
