Physics A Level at Farnham College

Course description

If you enjoy trying to explain the world around you, want to know what the universe is made of and how it works through various laws of nature, then this subject could be suitable for you. It involves challenging ideas and taking part in discussions, demonstrations and practical activities.

 Feedback from students consistently indicates that they find the course enjoyable, fun and challenging. Our student progression on to physics-related courses at university is well in excess of the national average.

Course content

You will study a range of topics from the very small – quarks inside the atom, to the very large - the structure and evolution of the universe.

Some topics you will have touched on at school; some you will encounter as new topics such as quantum mechanics, cosmology and fundamental particles.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grade C or above, including Maths, English and Physics (or another Science subject) at grade B or above

Assessment

Exams are held in June each year.

Practical skills are assessed in class.

AS Physics (June 2017). Two papers (90 minutes each) and 50% of final grade.

  • Paper 1 - Breadth in Physics includes practical skills, Forces and Motion, Electrons, Waves and Photons.
  • Paper 2 - Depth in Physics includes the same content as paper 1 with structured questions on theory and practical skills.

A Level (June 2018) - three papers.

  • Paper 1 - Modelling Physics (2 1/4 hours 37% of final grade) includes practical, Newtonian world, Forces and Motion, Astrophysics.
  • Paper 2 - Exploring Physics (2 1/4 hours 37% of final grade) includes practical, Electron Waves and Photons, Particles and Medical Physics.
  • Paper 3 - Unified Physics (1 1/2 hours 26% of final grade) includes structured questions on theory and practical skills covering all modules.
 

Future opportunities

Physics is a well-respected A Level and can lead to many different degrees and careers in ICT, engineering, optometry, medicine or biomedical sciences, pharmacy or non-science related areas such as economics.

 

Further information

Physics students require a scientific calculator and a memory stick.

Students have visited the Royal Society Summer Exhibition (in London), Didcot Power Station and the Nuclear Fusion Research Facility at Culham. They have enjoyed building roller coasters with Royal Holloway College and being an undergraduate Physics student for the day at Surrey University. Students may also visit London museums and take a river trip to Greenwich Observatory.

In July all of the AS students have the opportunity to go to the Royal Society Summer Exhibition which is a showcase for research and innovation in the industry and university.

There are regular interesting lectures at Surrey University to attend.
