A Level Art and Design at St Mary's RC High School

Course description

Students will follow a fine Art Course which includes a variety of experiences, exploring a range of
media, processes and techniques such as painting, drawing, mixed-media, collage, sculpture,
photography, ICT etc.
AS Level
Includes 1 unit of coursework and an externally set assignment:
Unit 1: Coursework Portfolio – 50% of AS mark – 25% of total A level mark.
Unit 2: Externally-set assignment – 50% of AS mark – 25% of total A level mark. This will include a lead-
in period of no more than 8 weeks on a range of questions set by AQA with a supervised 5 hour
study.
A2 Level
Includes 1 unit of coursework and an externally set assignment
Unit 1: Personal investigation based on an idea, issue, concept or theme supported by a written study
of 1,000 – 3,000 words – 25% of total A level mark.
Unit 2: Externally- set assignment – 25% of total A level mark. This will include a lead-in period of no
more than 8 weeks on a range of questions set by AQA with a supervised 15 hour final piece.

Entry requirements

Students should have grade A* – B at GCSE in Art and should have developed an ability to organise and
present individual research and show evidence of a personal response to ideas, observations,
experiences, environments and cultures. They should work from their own strengths and interests
within the requirements of the course, demonstrating an independent approach to their own learning.
