Further Mathematics A Level at South Bromsgrove High

Course description

This course is open only to the most able mathematicians. You will need to have studied at the Higher Tier and have gained an A or A* at GCSE. In addition, you should have studied the Free Standing Unit in Additional Mathematics and have gained at least a grade C.

For the AS you will need to do 3 additional modules; for the A level, another 6. The precise combination of modules will be agreed at the start of the course. Essentially, Further Mathematics builds on the topics studied at A level, developing and extending them into a wider range of situations and applications. It is an extremely intellectually demanding course and it is considered to be an excellent grounding for university degree courses in Mathematics, Physics and Engineering.

Mathematics A-Level is a universally respected qualification and university admissions tutors and employers alike are generally pleased to see it as it indicates applicants have a very useful set of unique skills. Clearly, it is a requirement for Mathematics degree courses.

Geography, Psychology, Sociology degrees will all usually have a module in mathematical techniques relating to the subject. Sports Science Degrees often have modules relating to bio mechanics which has a high content of Mathematics. The sciences such as Biology, Chemistry and Earth Sciences use more and more Mathematics as you progress and A level Mathematics will enhance your ability to do well. It is vital to the study of Physics. Business and management degrees all use Maths in areas such as accounting and financial indicators.
