A-Level Dance at Leeds West Academy

Course description

Dance as an art form is studied through practical and theoretical exploration. Students will develop their ability to create, perform and analyse dance. This course is an exciting and challenging one: it requires students to be highly motivated, good communicators and be able to accept and respond to constructive criticism. AS Dance will focus on the knowledge of technical and expressive skills in order to improve a dancer’s performance, the craft of choreography and the significance of dance works. Practically, students will have to create a solo in response to an exam question and perform in a duet or trio created by students or the teacher. A2 Dance will require students to study the contextual history of modern dance, and analyse in detail a professional piece of dance. Students will be required to produce group choreography and also perform a solo based on the work of a professional choreographer.

At LWA we hold very simple values: that learning is our focus and our core business; that relationships should always be positive and based on mutual respect; and that standards in teaching, learning and behaviour should always be high. This means we have high expectations of everyone within our community.

We have a first-class building and amazing facilities as well as great opportunities to offer our young people. It is packed full of innovative and engaging activities designed to promote active learning.
