Spanish at Reepham High School and College
Spanish is a language of worldwide importance. With over 320 million native speakers, it is the world’s second most widely spoken native language after Mandarin Chinese and is a language of growing prominence in many global industries. Spanish is one of the six official languages of the United Nations and is spoken not only in Spain, but throughout most of Latin America and by 34 million native speakers in the USA.
We offer a popular and well-established week-long exchange trip to Segovia in central Spain every year, and encourage our sixth form linguists to attend if possible. Committed linguists at A level will complete their two years of study with the ability to speak and write about all topics covered across the course, plus hold their own in a general conversation. The course of study is wide-ranging, focusing on popular and youth culture at AS and current affairs/economics topics at A2, along with an introduction to Hispanic literature and the opportunity to study a range of Spanish films.
Modern language A levels are assessed purely on final exams at the end of Year 12 and Year 13: there is no coursework assessment. 40% of marks in each year are assessed through an oral exam with a visiting examiner. The course suits well-disciplined learners who are highly motivated, prepared to follow their own interests and have an enquiring mind. All language A levels are highly respected by universities and appreciated by employers.
They go well with any combination of subjects, including Humanities, Sciences and Social Sciences. Linguists are in short supply in the UK job market, and a good A level in Spanish will enhance your employability significantly after college or university. Put simply, knowing Spanish will open up a whole world of possibilities to you.
You will need at least 5 GCSEs at grade C or above including English or Mathematics and have to meet the minimum entry requirements for each subject. Grade ‘B’ in Spanish
