Performing Arts UAL level 2 Diploma at Wirral Metropolitan College

Course description

This practical course focuses on performance classes providing the opportunity to develop a range of skills needed for employment in the theatre industry. Good links with local and national production companies, performance venues and theatre organisations provide valuable opportunities for learning and future employment.

These exciting new qualifications are validated by the University of the Arts,London, and tailor made to meet the demands of the theatre and performance industries. The qualification provides students with a chance to explore their talent and test their creativity and ambition in a broad range of performing and production arts skills.

This certificate will be awarded by UAL (which includes the prestigious colleges of Central St Martins, and Camberwell College of Arts). Wirral Met College has been approved to deliver this qualification by UAL. They are not available to any other college in this region of the UK.

Course content

Students learn by completing projects based on the realistic activities and demands of the theatre. They gain practical experience in a range of production forms such as devising, performing scripts, mask making and dance. The course has a schedule of performances throughout the year.

All students study rehearsal techniques, learn about the theatre business and explore approaches to acting and dance performance. Weekly workshops develop skills and techniques in voice and movement. The course concludes with a final production that is staged at a public theatre venue.

The qualification is equal to 4 GCCE's at grade C or a BTEC First Diploma. Students who achieve a Merit or higher can continue onto the Diploma in Performing and Production Arts at Level 3.

The course is based in a purpose built facility equipped with a theatre space and dressing rooms and drama/dance studios

The course suits those with a strong interest in performing arts.

Entry requirements

Priority will be given to 16-18 year olds.

  • Level 1 qualification plus ability to demonstrate working at Level 1 English and maths through Initial Diagnostic Assessment or 3 GCSEs or more at Grade D. (Including English & maths)
  • Satisfactory interview and satisfactory reference.
  • Students will be required to demonstrate a keen interest in the subject area.
  • An audition is part of the interview process.

If English is not your first language, you may need an assessment before enrolling on this course.

Assessment

All coursework is internally assessed regularly and externally verified annually. There is no exam. All students aged 16-19 may need to study GCSE English or Maths if they have not already achieved a grade C.

Future opportunities

Successful students may progress onto the Level 3 Diploma in Performing and Production Arts or further educational studies within the Performing Arts.

Study programmes are full-time courses for 16-18 year olds which include:

  • A qualification such as BTEC Extended Diploma
  • Meaningful work experience or preparation for work
  • English and maths, if you don't already have GCSE grade A*-C in English and maths already
  • Non-study activities such as tutorials, voluntary work, fund-raising/charity work, sport or trips
