Drama and Theatre Studies A level at Eckington School

Course description

Year 12

In Y12 students carry out the edexcel course which is 40% controlled conditions and 60% practical exam.

In unit 1 two plays are studied; Hedda Gabler by Ibsen and Metamorphosis by Berkoff. The students explore these plays practically and then write about them to reflect on the decisions made in the lesson.

Unit 2 is a practical unit whereby students must learn, rehearse and perform a monologue or duologue for an examiner. Students must also perform in a group performance of a scripted play which is directed by the teacher.

Year 13

In Y13 the edexcel course is 40% controlled conditions and 60% written exam. Students study and explore the play Woyzeck.

In a written exam students must respond to how they would rehearse and direct the play focusing on visual, spatial and aural elements.

Students must also write in exam conditions about a live Shakespeare performance that they see at the RSC in Stratford upon Avon and compare it to its original performance concept. This means students learn about Elizabethan theatre and compare how this type of theatre differs to theatre of the 21st century. Students also have the opportunity to study the drama practitioner Bertolt Brecht and devise a performance in his style.
