Art & Design (Graphic Design) UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma at Havering College of Further and Higher Education
You will build upon your skills through a series of practical projects and written assignments that explore creative thinking and design. This course is predominately practical and you will spend most of your time in the purpose-built graphics studio using the suite of Apple Mac computers and scanners.
You will study a variety of units that total 180 credits and cover the following areas:
- Drawing Techniques
- Materials Techniques and Processes
- Contextual Studies (History of Art and Design)
- Computer in Art and Design
- Traditional Illustration
- Visual Communication
- Editorial Design
Your work will be in line with contemporary industry practice and will be based on finding creative solutions to realistic problems. The practical work is supported by a programme of contextual studies and where possible we will look to visit a number of galleries and museums.
If you have not yet achieved a grade C (or above) in GCSE English and maths, you will be required to attend GCSE resit sessions (if you achieved grade D) or functional skills sessions (if you achieved grade E or below).
- At least 4 GCSEs at grade C or above (including English and art/design).*
- A portfolio of art and design work.
*A First Diploma in Art and Design at merit level will also be accepted. In exceptional circumstances, particularly for mature students, a relaxation of formal qualifications may be possible if you demonstrate a high level of ability and passion.
You will be assessed throughout the year via written and practical assignments.
You could progress onto our Level 4 HNC in Graphic Design.
Employment opportunities could include work in a junior positions within the design industry.
