A Level in Applied ICT (Double Award) at The Douay Martyrs School

Course description

The Edexcel GCE in Applied ICT aims to produce effective, discerning ICT users who:

• can select and use appropriate ICT tools and techniques to help them carry out investigations, capture and handle data, solve problems, make decisions, and present and communicate information.

• are aware of the benefits and drawbacks of ICT and its impact on the way in which people live their lives.

• can plan and manage projects and work effectively with others.

Course content

There are 6 units, 5 of which are compulsory and the sixth is chosen from 3 optional units.


Year 12 AS

In additional to Units 1-3 as covered in AS Single Award Applied ICT:

Unit 4 – System Design & Installation (portfolio)

Unit 5 – Web Development (portfolio)

Unit 6 – Technical Support (portfolio)


Year 13 A2

In addition to Units 7, 8 & 10 covered in A2 Single Award Applied ICT:-

Unit 9 – Communications & Networks (practical assessment)

Unit 12 – Customising Application Software (portfolio)

Unit 13 – Web Management (portfolio)

Entry requirements

No previous study is required although students wishing to study this subject will need to fulfil the general entry requirements for The Douay Martyrs School Sixth Form. Students should have an interest in developing the knowledge and skills they need to be a competent and informed ICT user and practitioner.

Assessment is by portfolio or a practical assessment.


Future opportunities

Students who successfully complete the qualification will be well equipped to move onto degrees and BTEC Higher National Diplomas in related subjects such as ICT, Computer Science, Information Systems, Multimedia, Software Engineering, Computer Networking, e-Business and Information Management. Those who opt for work-based training are likely to progress to IT User/Practitioner NVQs or vendor-specific qualifications.
