Applied Business A Level at Sir Thomas Wharton Community College
If you are thinking of following a career in one of the many areas of business, or thinking of studying a business related degree at University, then this may be the course for you.
The Advanced GCE in Applied Business is a broad-based qualification that provides the opportunity for students to explore the world of business in a highly practical way. By adopting an investigative approach, students develop a range of skills while discovering the problems and opportunities faced by business. Emphasis is based on realistic business contexts and activities. Former students have gone to University to study a variety of Business related degree courses. Others have secured excellent jobs with training. Applied Business combines well with almost all other AS and A level subjects and it can be used to broaden your studies.
You will need GCSE Business Studies at a Grade C/ Business BTEC Level 2 Merit and GCSE grade C in English or where Business Studies has not been studied at KS4 both GCSE Maths and English at a grade C are required. You do not need to have studied GCSE Business or BTEC Business to do this course but you will need to be prepared to work hard right from the start! Successful students are able to work independently and meet deadlines.
AS is the first part of the course, A2 the second, with each contributing 50% of the total Advanced GCE. In Year 12 you will complete 3 Units include ‘People in Business’ and ‘Investigating Businesses’. These units encourage investigation and support a highly active, student – centred approach.
In Year 13 you can then continue with a further 3 units of study. Units include ‘Business Planning’ and ‘Promotion Activities'. These units require a decision making approach, encouraging students to consider management decisions and their impact on businesses.
Applied Business is 2/3 internally assessed and 1/3 written examination. The examination is based on two pre-release case studies. This assessment matches the teaching and learning of Business Studies and provides a mixture of examinations and a coursework emphasis, which can be more suitable for some students.
Business is an exciting and diverse sector with a vast range of opportunities. The course can prepare you for jobs and successful performance in working life in areas such as accounting, administration, customer services, finance, IT, personnel or sales.
