Why study English Literature?

English Literature can help us to understand and explore different aspects of human nature such as love, lust, ambition and death. It offers students who enjoy reading, the opportunity to study and talk about a wide range of genres.

Aspects of narrative (prose and poetry); Dramatic genres, Texts and genres; Further and independent reading.

Where Next?

English Literature has always been among the most highly valued academic subjects for a wide range of university and careers choices. It can be combined with arts, science or mathematics for entry into higher education. At university, the subject is useful for any course with a detailed study of literature, including Foreign Languages, Linguistics, Law, History and Education. In English Literature A-level teaches a very broad range of transferable skills, including independent research, the ability to analyse and evaluate different points of view, the capacity to think logically and to understand a range of human responses. It has particular value for careers in law, teaching, civil and social services, nursing, journalism and media, libraries, human resources and most management areas.

5 GCSEs at Grade A* - C; Grade B in English Literature or English Language.
