Hairdressing Apprenticeship Intermediate at East Berkshire College

Course description

All Apprenticeships consist of a Framework of different elements. They must include qualifications that, when achieved, prove the Apprentice's competence in carrying out work of the Level and type identified in the Framework.

Also included must be qualifications which demonstrate the technical knowledge of the job and industry, plus more wide ranging general skills required to operate successfully in the trade; these will include Maths, English and, if appropriate, ICT and Employer Rights and Responsibilities.

The different elements can be combined in one qualification, or be covered in separate qualifications, but all elements must be achieved to obtain a full Apprentice Certificate.

The Competency qualification in this Apprenticeship is Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing

Course content

NVQ competence units

The qualification has a flexible structure which enables employers and apprentices to select a spiky skills profile to reflect the job role most accurately.

To achieve a Level 2 candidates need a minimum of nine units:

  • •Health and Safety
  • •Customer Service 
  • Customer Consultation
  • Shampoo and Condition 
  • Style and dress
  • Set and dress
  • Cutting
  • Colouring

Optional units

  • Promoting products and services •
  • Reception duties •
  • Perming •
  • Plaiting and twisting

Entry requirements

  • In contracted employment with a salon and have been for at least three months •
  • Hold GCSE's or equivalent qualifications in English and Maths
  • Display a positive attitude and passion for the industry

Assessment

You will be assessed within the college as well in the workplace to ensure all the competencies are met.

Regular review meetings will take place with your assessor and employer to support the achievement of the qualification.

Future opportunities

Following the Foundation Modern Apprenticeship, learners can progress on to the Advanced Apprenticeship covering Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing.

Following the completion of both FMA and AMA learners can expect to progress in the industry looking at competition work, Cruise ship employment, salon management roles, assessing roles, technician work.
