AS/A2 Latin at Durham High School For Girls

Course description

The aim of the course is to enable you to use the Latin language confidently as a means of understanding the literature and culture of Rome. You will perfect your technique in translation and acquire a much wider vocabulary than you needed for GCSE. You will study prose and verse set texts in detail so that you can appreciate them in their original language and gain some knowledge of their historical and social background.

Entry requirements

You should have a good grade at GCSE if you are to be successful at AS and A2 level. The acquisition of background knowledge is part of the course but you should be eager to read widely and to study independently.

Future opportunities

At university Latin can be studied as part of a degree course in Classics, or alone, or in combination with another subject. A recent independent survey of the attitude of employers to Classics graduates shows considerable respect for their intellectual qualities and a very positive attitude towards employing them. One year's survey of the employment of Classics graduates show that they went into financial work, buying/ marketing/ selling, administration /operational management, creative/entertainment, personnel/social services, management services, information/library work as well as teaching and lecturing. As an A/AS qualification it serves as proof to universities of a candidate's ability to deal with an intellectually rigorous subject and is therefore an attractive addition to the portfolio. You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Classical Civilisation, which could lead onto higher education in Classical Civilisation or related subjects such as English, American Studies, or Politics. With further training, you could go into a job related to classical civilisation by seeking employment in areas of heritage such as working for a museum or within education such as a history teacher. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for. You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Latin, which could lead onto higher education to study Latin, Literature Studies, History or more general higher education courses. With further training, you may wish to extend your interest in Latin and go into a job related to Latin such as a Teacher. You could also consider a job related to modern languages as the course will develop your understanding of different languages and cultures. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you develop the skills and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for. .
