Computing BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma at Warwickshire College Group

Course description

The Extended Diploma is a two year course. The first year is equivalent to 1.5 A level (90 Credit).  Successful completion of the first year with an overall Merit will allow progression to year 2 to complete a total of 3 A level equivalents graded from Pass to Distinction*.  This course prepares you for employment or entry to higher education (depending on previous experience and final grade). Students learn by completing assignments and projects, many of which will be based around actual companies, with realistic situations and demands.  There will also be two written examinations and two controlled assessments over the duration of the course.

  • Principles of Computer Science
  • Fundamentals of Computer Systems
  • Planning and Management of Computing Projects
  • Software Design and Development Project
  • IT Systems Security and Encryption
  • Business Applications of Social Media
  • The Impact of Computing

Specialist Units – you may study:

  • Human-Computer Interaction
  • Computer Games Development
  • Object-oriented Programming
  • Mobile Apps Development
  • Computer Networking
  • Managing and Supporting Systems
  • Systems Analysis and Design
  • Systems Methodology

Entry requirements

5 Grade C's at GCSE in suitable areas including Maths and English, or a Merit in a Level 2 course plus numeracy and literacy qualifications equivalent to Level 2.


A variety of assessment methods such as Video, Audio and Document Creation are used.  Most of the work is carried out through projects and your work will be stored on a Google Site as an electronic portfolio The projects require you to complete real work tasks to meet milestones (deadlines) as you would for a business but within a supportive college environment.

For each unit of study you will be allocated a grade (Pass, Merit or Distinction).  Your final 'A Level grades for the Nationals will be calculated from the total points from each unit.

Future opportunities


On successful completion of this course you will be able to consider a wide range of employment opportunities in many areas such as communications, administration, software and hardware development, commerce, user support and networking which could be part of an Apprenticeship programme if you wish to continue to learn while you earn! 


You may wish to study a course in higher education such as a 2 year Foundation Degree in Computing followed by a Third year Honours Degree in Computer Strategy and Management at Warwickshire College, or other higher education degree courses at an HE institution.
