Theatre Studies A Level at Wirral Grammar School for Girls
Theatre Studies is a demanding but very rewarding course. We approach all of our work from a practical viewpoint and as a theatre studies student you will be expected to contribute to this in class. If Drama has been studied then a grade B at GCSE would be required before starting this course.
At AS level you will study one set play from the list given and you will perform as EITHER an actor OR designer in a scripted piece of theatre. You will also be required to see some live theatre.
At A level you will study two set plays from the list given and you will perform EITHER as an actor OR designer in a devised piece of theatre. It is also a great way to develop your communication skills, team work and interpersonal skills.
Unit 1: Live Theatre Production Seen and Prescribed Play.
Written Paper, 1 hour 30mins, 60% of total AS marks, 30% of total A level marks.
Section A: Response to live theatre seen during the course.
Section B: A study of one set play
.Unit 2: Presentation of an Extract from a Play.
Practical, 40% of total AS marks, 20% of total A Level marks.
Working in groups of 2-8 performers, plus optionally, a director and designers, to present an extract from a published play, chosen by the candidates. Study of an influential director, designer, theatre company or other practitioner (historical or contemporary), linked to the candidate’s practical work.
Unit 3: Further Prescribed Plays including Pre-Twentieth Century
Written paper, 2 hours, 30% of total A level marks.
Section A: Choice of one pre-20th century play.
Section B: Choice of one 20th century play.
Unit 4: Presentation of Devised Drama
Practical, 20% of total A level marks.
Working in groups of 2-8 performers, plus optionally, a director and designers, to develop and present a piece of devised drama, performed in a theatrical style of the candidates’ choice. Research into the selected theatrical style.
