Public Services (Uniformed) BTEC Level 1 Certificate at Stafford College

Course description

This programme provides students with a broad-based knowledge and roles in the Uniformed Services.

Course content

The programme comprises two mandatory units:

  • Prep for Work
  • Work skills

 

And the following selected optional units:

  • Conduct at Work
  • Public Service Careers
  • Improving Health & Fitness
  • Introduction to Security Work
  • Practical Teamwork

 

In addition Functional Skills in

  • Literacy
  • Numeracy
  • ICT

 

Confidence building and strategies for personal development will be taught alongside Skills for Life qualifications and vocational units, including numeracy and literacy.  Staff from the Vocational area will deliver 4 units, with the remaining units being taught by the staff of the Foundation Learning Team. 

 

Vocational Training

The vocational training involved forms approximately 40% of the course and has been designed in conjunction with the various services.  These services also have an input into the course through presentations and visits.

 

English & Maths

We are committed to helping students improve their skills in English and Maths. Students on a full-time course at College who missed out on GCSE qualifications at grades A-C in these subjects at school will attend additional classes and receive support to enhance their grades. Depending on individual ability, students will work towards GCSE, City & Guilds or Functional Skills awards to ensure that they have the qualifications needed to progress to university or employment.

Entry requirements

There are no academic entry requirements for this course but an initial assessment is required.

 

Students should understand that this course requires discipline because of the career to be pursued.  Students passing the interview and physical assessment will be required to wear a uniform on specified days and visits (uniform details on application). 

Assessment

Continuous assessment of coursework, assignments and project work.  Submission of a portfolio containing evidence from the assignments that have been completed showing the necessary level of knowledge and skill.

Future opportunities

BTEC Level 1 Certificate in Public Services is a recognised qualification which can lead to job opportunities in the uniformed services such as Army, Navy, Royal Marines, RAF, Police, Fire Service, Prison Service.  Progression onto the BTEC Level 2 Diploma is recommended on completion.
