Geography at Attleborough Academy Norfolk
We follow the AQA course which has been designed to avoid repetition from GCSE and to concentrate on up-to-the-minute contemporary and relevant issues. At AS Level the course is split into Physical and Human issues and there is a Geographic Skills paper. Coursework is not assessed in Y12 but we do run a trip to North Yorkshire in the Spring Term of Year 12 which covers the information and fieldwork required for the skills paper.
A2 is particularly contemporary and students’ learning is expected to be based on very recent events, many of them ongoing. Students will be learning about things they are experiencing, either directly or through the media. For example, we look at the ongoing conflict in Palestine. As part of the A2 assessment students study an advance information booklet which covers a very topical issue; students research and evaluate this issue before completing an exam based on the advance information booklet.
To study Geography at AS/A2 you would normally be expected to receive, in addition to the general entry requirements, a minimum grade C in GCSE Geography. However, students who did not take Geography at GCSE but achieved high grades in other subjects may also be accepted, subject to individual discussion. The AS/A2 course was specifically designed to allow this to take place. An interest in world and local events and an enquiring mind are also important!
