Physical Education A Level at St Helens College

Course description

There has never been more emphasis on living a healthy lifestyle. The importance of sport and exercise is recognised at many levels, from the individual to the nation as a whole.

This A level is designed for those interested in the performance aspects of sport, as well as the physiology and psychology of sport.

You will have the opportunity to investigate all areas of sports performance through a combination of theory and practical lessons.

Course content

This A level covers the following units:

  • Factors affecting participation in physical activity and sport, such as the cardio-respiratory cardiovascular systems, the musculo-skeletal system, energy, skills acquisition, theories of learning and performance, and giving feedback and guidance.
  • Sport in society including class and gender differences
  • Physiology including injury, movement and motion
  • Sports psychology
  • Sports and technology

You will have the opportunity to develop your skills in various sports, and will be assessed as a coach or performer in a specific area of sport.

Entry requirements

You should have five GCSEs at grade C or above, including English and maths. A GCSE in PE is not essential, although those who have studied PE will find that this A level builds on the information and skills previously gained.
